Building Better Chambers and Associations in Pakistan

“Chambers of commerce and business associations in Pakistan have started showing significant improvements in the way they serve their members. Contributing to that outcome is CIPE’s continued work on capacity building initiatives to help chamber and association staff learn modern corporate governance and management concepts. As a part of these efforts, last week CIPE organized the 3rd annual Secretaries’ General Conference in Lahore.

34 secretaries general (the paid CEO position) representing chambers of commerce and sectoral association from across Pakistan attended the event, including 17 new participants. CIPE efforts were also successful in bringing secretaries general from women chambers in areas such as Mardan, Peshawar and Quetta that are generally considered difficult for women’s empowerment. For Nazia Durrani, newly elected Secretary General of Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Mardan, it was the first such event. “It was a great opportunity for me,” she said. Other participants shared that view, emphasizing that this annual conference provides them with a unique common platform for learning and networking.”

KnowHow, CIPE’s new online resource, matches the professional skills of corporate or individual volunteers with business associations seeking technical assistance. The online resource targets associations, rather than single entrepreneurs or business professionals, because helping an association multiplies the effect of a single intervention across an entire membership. While KnowHow is open to all associations, the first group of participants are women’s associations, like the Women in Business and Management (WIMBIZ) in Nigeria. Networking in Palestine

Palestinian Territories – CIPE partner the Business Women Forum (BWF) hosted a networking event on March 29 in Ramallah under the patronage of the Palestinian Minister of the National Economy, H.E Dr. Hassan Abu Libdeh. The event, which included over 80 attendees and representatives from local and national government, was part of an ongoing effort by BWF to form strategic partnerships with key private sector civil society organizations in Palestine. Minister Abu Libdeh highlighted BWF’s success in advancing the participation of women in Palestine’s policy and decision-making process, despite the Forum’s relatively recent establishment. BWF Chairwoman Amal Masri discussed the importance of strengthening the role of businesswomen as leaders in the Palestinian economy through advocacy activities, networking, and the provision of business services.
